Most readers that read my tips usually want a quick answer in the
first paragraph. For this month’s tip – if you want
a press release published pick ONE or preferably all of the following
topics:
- War
- Pets
- Sex
- Power
- Hard Luck Stories
- Money
- Catastrophe
A badly written press release dealing with all of the above issues
virtually guarantees publication.
In the absence of all of the above issues, it’s essential to
ask yourself
“WHO GIVES A DAMN?”
If the answer is “Only me”, please do not write it.
However, if the answer is:
- My street – send it only to your street
- The local community – send it to your community paper
- The city – send it to the city media
- The nation – send it to national media
- The world – place it in the international media/Internet
Before you exaggerate the importance of the media issue, also ask
yourself – “HOW
MUCH OF A DAMN WOULD THEY GIVE?”
For example, you are opening up a car grease and oil change franchise
that quickly trains up the young unemployed to provide these services
at half the cost of the competition.
WHO GIVES A DAMN? HOW MUCH OF A
DAMN?
- Car owners who want to reduce car maintenance – care
lots.
- Federal Government agencies responsible for unemployment –
care lots.
- Society – greatly want unemployment to go down.
- Consumers – are always keen to test new products.

to Add:
- Date
- Embargo or Immediate Release
- Sharp short introduction
- Details answering – who, why, when, where and how
- A short quotation
- A brief background on the company and the possible impact
