CAN I GET INTO MARKETING? |

WHAT TO TELL PEOPLE WHO ASK YOUR BUSINESS
THE QUESTION...
"I've left school/want a career change and would love to go into
marketing. What steps do I take?"
Before you can enter the marketing arena you need to know what “marketing”
means.
Credibility is important in any field but particularly in marketing.
Now more than ever, educational qualifications in marketing are important.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
The first step is to complete a marketing degree. Courses in marketing
I have found useful:
- Bachelor of Business (Marketing)
- Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing)
- Marketing Certificate or Diploma
- Master in Marketing
SYSTEMATIC WORK EXPERIENCE
Whilst completing a marketing degree it is critical to get “systematic”
marketing
related experience.
Within the first two years of the degree, gain voluntary experience
in:
- Community Projects
- Tourism Information Offices
- Local Government
- Schools
- Marketing Companies
- Market Research Firms
- Public Relations Firms
- Advertising Firms
- Local Churches
- Local Welfare Agencies
This establishes a crystal clear idea of what marketing involves
on the practical level and identifies specialties.
During your last year of the degree or course get casual/ part-time
job experience in marketing.
MEMBERSHIPS
Join the AMI (Australian Marketing Institute) and become involved
in their activities.
PRESENTATION
- Brush up on your personal presentation and your resume
- Send your resume to companies you would like to work with (whether
they need you or not)
- Follow up all companies to which you send a resume
- Show that you have initiative and how you can add value to clients.
For example, get the company’s yellow page and show how
you can improve it
